PHILIPPE JORDAN conducts LYDIA STEIER ’s new “Tannhäuser” production at the Vienna State Opera

Philippe Jordan will conduct a new production of Richard Wagner's "Tannhäuser" at the Vienna State Opera in May and June 2025. Lydia Steier directs the production, Momme Hinrichs designs the sets and video, and Alfred Mayerhofer designs the costumes. This significant new production brings together an outstanding creative team for one of Wagner's most impressive works.

Following the new Wagner productions of "Parsifal," "Tristan und Isolde," "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," and "Lohengrin" over the past four seasons, "Tannhäuser" is on the Vienna State Opera's premiere schedule this May. The work will be staged by Lydia Steier, a successful director in Paris, Salzburg, Dresden, Berlin, and Vienna, whose debut at the opera house on the Ring is eagerly awaited. Philippe Jordan will conduct, and the cast will include debutant Clay Hilley as Tannhäuser, Malin Byström as Elisabeth, Ekaterina Gubanova as Venus, Ludovic Tézier as Wolfram, and Günther Groissböck as Landgrave Hermann. Philippe Jordan has been Music Director of the Vienna State Opera since 2020 and has significantly shaped the house's artistic profile through acclaimed new productions such as "Madama Butterfly," "Parsifal," "Macbeth," "The Marriage of Figaro," "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg," "Tristan and Isolde," and "Salome." In the 2023/24 season, he will conduct "Il Trittico" and the finale of the Da Ponte cycle, "Così fan tutte."

Jordan is also in demand internationally outside of Vienna – including a Ring cycle at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and symphonic engagements with leading orchestras worldwide. Starting in the 2027/28 season, he will be Music Director of the Orchestre National de France .

This new “Tannhäuser” production impressively continues his artistic vision at the Vienna State Opera.
