Biography
The award-winning Austrian costume designer Alfred Mayerhofer has been working internationally in the fields of opera, theatre, ballet, film and television since 1992.
In the 2026/27 season, Alfred Mayerhofer will design the costumes for Ronja Räubertochter at the Volksoper Wien (directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam) and for the semi-staged production of Bretter, die die Welt bedeuten at the Komische Oper Berlin (directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam). Further projects take him to the Gärtnerplatztheater München with Romeo und Julia (directed by Herbert Föttinger), to the Staatstheater Darmstadt with Peter Grimes (directed by Karsten Wiegand), to Bühne Baden with Die Blume von Hawaii (directed by Alexander Balga), to the Gärtnerplatztheater München with Ariadne auf Naxos (directed by Josef E. Köpplinger), and to the Bregenz Festival with Die sieben Todsünden / Abyss.

Alfred Mayerhofer’s work is characterised by stylistic diversity and narrative precision. He is known to a wide television audience through the television series Kafka, for which he was honoured with the DAfNE Award for Best Costume Design in February 2025.
His most recent work includes Die verkaufte Braut at the Vienna State Opera, Konrad and Mokka-Hits und Milchbar-Träume at the Komische Oper Berlin, Aschenbrödels Traum and Ronja Räubertochter at the Volksoper Wien, Schneewittchen und die 77 Zwerge at Graz Opera, L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, Regina at Oper Leipzig, and La traviata at the Gärtnerplatztheater München. Successful productions of past seasons include the world premiere of Alma at the Volksoper Wien (directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam), Intermezzo at the Semperoper Dresden (directed by Axel Ranisch), Carmen and La Cage aux Folles (directed by Josef Köpplinger), A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Im weißen Rössl and Tannhäuser (directed by Lydia Steier) at the Vienna State Opera, Die Zauberflöte (directed by Josef E. Köpplinger) and Der Vogelhändler (directed by Bernd Mottl) at the Gärtnerplatztheater München, Nils Holgersson (directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam) and Messeschlager Gisela (directed by Axel Ranisch) at the Komische Oper Berlin, and Die lustige Witwe (directed by Bernd Mottl) at Oper Köln.

He has enjoyed a close collaboration with Lydia Steier since 2013: Des Kaisers neue Kleider (Komische Oper Berlin), Iolanta – Oedipus Rex (Oper Frankfurt), La Juive and Le nozze di Figaro (Staatsoper Hannover).
