Kirill Serebrennikov directs in Amsterdam and Berlin

The acclaimed theater, opera, and film director KIRILL SEREBRENNIKOV will bring two major new productions to European opera stages in 2025.

“Boris Godunov” – Dutch National Opera

After his impressive debut in Amsterdam with "Der Freischütz," Kirill Serebrennikov returns to the Dutch National Opera with a bold reinterpretation of Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov." In this new production, Serebrennikov draws clear parallels between the political upheaval in Tsarist Russia and today's power struggles—and highlights the extent to which authoritarian regimes rule at the expense of the people.

Acclaimed bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny makes his role debut as Boris Godunov. He is joined by Raehann Bryce-Davis as Marina Mnishek, Dmitry Ulyanov as Pimen, and Najmiddin Mavlyanov as Grigory. Vasily Petrenko makes his Dutch National Opera debut conducting the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Dutch National Opera Chorus.

Dutch National Opera:
PREMIERE: June 10, 2025

Further performances: June 14, 17, 20, 23, and 26, 2025

“Don Giovanni” / “Requiem” – Komische Oper Berlin

At the Komische Oper Berlin, Serebrennikov concludes his Mozart-Da Ponte cycle with a new production of "Don Giovanni" combined with the unfinished sections of Mozart's "Requiem." Following "Così fan tutte" and "The Marriage of Figaro," this final chapter is set in the limbo of the "Bardo"—a Buddhist concept of an intermediate state after death. Don Giovanni's pleasures appear here as a preparation for the afterlife, and his journey into hell culminates in the musical sublimity of the "Requiem."

This profound production once again underlines Serebrennikov's uncompromising artistic style, which combines philosophical depth with visual power.

Komische Oper Berlin:
PREMIERE: April 27, 2025

Further performances: May 3, 9, 11, 14, 17, and 23, 2025

With these two new productions, Kirill Serebrennikov once again reaffirms his position as one of the most original and courageous voices in contemporary musical theatre.
