Biography
Philippe Jordan, born into a renowned Swiss artistic family, is one of the most important and established conductors of his generation. His international career has taken him to the world's leading opera houses, festivals, and concert halls. Starting with the 2027/28 season, he will assume the position of Music Director of the Orchestre National de France .

From September 2020 to June 2025, Jordan was Music Director of the Vienna State Opera. During this time, he conducted numerous outstanding new productions, including Madama Butterfly, Parsifal, Macbeth, Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tristan und Isolde, Salome, and Il Trittico. He placed particular artistic emphasis on the completely new Da Ponte cycle by Mozart. In his final season, he conducted the new productions of Don Carlo and Tannhäuser, as well as revivals of the Mozart cycle and Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen.
In the summer of 2025, Philippe Jordan returned to the Salzburg Festival, where he again conducted Macbeth . In the autumn of 2025, he will perform Der Rosenkavalier at the Vienna State Opera as part of a tour in Japan. Further concert engagements in the current season will take him to Orchestre National de France , to the Opéra de Paris, to La Scala in Milan, to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, to the Staatskapelle Dresden , to the Orchester Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, to Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich , with the Bamberg Symphony, the Vienna Symphony, and the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, as well as in the USA with orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, and Atlanta Symphony. In Asia, he has performed with the Seoul Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
Jordan's artistic career began as Kapellmeister at the Theater Ulm and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. From 2001 to 2004, he was chief conductor of the Graz Opera and the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. During this time, he also made his debut at numerous leading opera houses and festivals, including the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Teatro alla Scala, the Bavarian and Vienna State Operas, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and the Aix-en-Provence, Glyndebourne and Salzburg Festivals. Between 2006 and 2010, he was Principal Guest Conductor at the Berlin State Opera. He made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 2012 with Parsifal; in 2017 he returned with a new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, which he also conducted in subsequent years.
From 2009 to 2021, Philippe Jordan was Music Director of the OPÉRA NATIONAL DE PARIS. There he conducted a large number of important productions, including Moses und Aron, La damnation de Faust, Der Rosenkavalier, Samson et Dalila, Lohengrin, Don Carlos in the original French version, Les Troyens, Don Giovanni, a new production of Borodin's Fürst Igor, and Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen in a concert version.
From 2014 to 2020, he was also Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Highlights of his work with this orchestra included complete cycles of the symphonies of Schubert and Beethoven , all of Beethoven's piano concertos, a large cycle of masses and oratorios by Johann Sebastian Bach and a contrasting dialogue between Bruckner's last three symphonies and works by György Kurtág, György Ligeti and Giacinto Scelsi.
As a concert conductor, Philippe Jordan has worked with the most important orchestras worldwide, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the BRSO, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale RAI, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de France , as well as almost all major North American orchestras – including the symphony orchestras of Boston, Seattle, St. Louis, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Washington, Minnesota, Montreal, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
