Biography
Philippe Jordan, from a renowned Swiss family of artists, is today one of the most important and established conductors of his generation. His international career has taken him to the world's leading opera houses, festivals, and concert halls. He is currently the designated Music Director of the Orchestre National de France and will take office at the start of the 2027/28 season.

In the 2026/27 season, Jordan will conduct a new production of La forza del destino at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, as well as concerts at the Zurich Opera House. Further engagements will take him to... Orchestre National de France , to the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, to the hr-Sinfonieorchester, to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, to Orchestre national de Lyon , to the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, to Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne , to the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana at the Palau de les Arts, to the WDR Symphony Orchestra, to the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and to the Vienna Philharmonic at the Mozart Week in Salzburg.
In the 2025/26 season, Jordan conducted Der Rosenkavalier as part of a Japan tour with the Vienna State Opera. Further engagements took him to the Opéra de Paris, La Scala in Milan, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and the... Orchestre National de France , to Staatskapelle Dresden He has conducted the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra. In the summer of 2026, he led the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra on a European tour.
From September 2020 to June 2025, Jordan was Music Director of the Vienna State Opera. During this time, he conducted numerous outstanding new productions, including Madama Butterfly , Parsifal , Macbeth , Le Nozze di Figaro , Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , Tristan und Isolde , Salome , and Il Trittico . He paid particular artistic attention to Mozart's entirely new Da Ponte cycle. In his final season, he conducted new productions of Don Carlo and Tannhäuser , as well as revivals of the Mozart cycle and Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen .
Jordan's artistic career began as Kapellmeister at the Theater Ulm and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. From 2001 to 2004, he was chief conductor of the Graz Opera and the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. During this time, he also made his debuts at numerous leading opera houses and festivals, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, La Scala, the Bavarian State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. Festspielhaus Baden-Baden He has conducted at the Aix-en-Provence and Glyndebourne Festivals, as well as at the Salzburg Festival, where he conducted Macbeth in the summer of 2025. Between 2006 and 2010, he was Principal Guest Conductor at the Berlin State Opera. He made his Bayreuth Festival debut in 2012 with Parsifal ; in 2017, he returned with a new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , which he also conducted in subsequent years.
From 2009 to 2021, Philippe Jordan was Music Director of the Opéra national de Paris, where he conducted numerous major productions, including Moses und Aron, La Damnation de Faust, Der Rosenkavalier, Samson et Dalila, Lohengrin, Don Carlos in its original French version, Les Troyens, Don Giovanni, a new staging of Borodin’s Prince Igor, and Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen in a concert version.
From 2014 to 2020, he also served as Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Highlights of his tenure included complete cycles of the symphonies of Schubert and Beethoven, all of Beethoven’s piano concertos, an extensive series of masses and oratorios by Johann Sebastian Bach, and a contrasting dialogue between Bruckner’s final three symphonies and works by György Kurtág, György Ligeti, and Giacinto Scelsi.
As a concert conductor, Philippe Jordan has collaborated with the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO), the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestre de Paris. Orchestre National de France as well as almost all major North American orchestras – including the symphony orchestras of Boston, Seattle, St. Louis, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Washington, Minnesota, Montreal, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
