Biography
British conductor Alexander Soddy ranks among the most sought-after conductors of his generation and is regularly engaged by the world’s leading orchestras and opera houses.

In the 2026/27 season, Soddy returns to the Vienna State Opera for a new production of The Queen of Spades , as well as revivals of Tristan und Isolde and Così fan tutte ; he will also conduct the Vienna Opera Ball. He makes his house debut at the Zurich Opera House with a new production of La traviata . He returns to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden for Samson et Dalila and Tosca , and to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino for a new production of Tristan und Isolde and a concert with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale.
In the concert arena, Soddy makes his concert debut at La Scala this season, opening the house's 2027 concert season with the Filarmonica della Scala. He makes his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago with a concert featuring music by Wagner and the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus. He also returns to the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Further orchestral debuts take him to the Frankfurt Opera and Museumsorchester , to the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, to Orchestre national de Lyon He will conduct Sinfonia Varsovia, the Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice, and the Orchestra del Teatro di San Carlo. He will also make his debut at the Festival Radio France Montpellier and will again conduct the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, with whom he first collaborated earlier in the season.
In recent seasons, several projects have marked significant artistic milestones: Das Rheingold and Die Walküre as the opening of the much-acclaimed new Ring cycle at La Scala, followed by Siegfried , Götterdämmerung and the complete cycle, as well as Così fan tutte at this house; the world premiere of Kirill Serebrennikov's production of Lohengrin at the Opéra national de Paris ; his debut with the NHK Symphony Orchestra as part of the Tokyo Spring Festival with a concert performance of The Flying Dutchman as well as his debut at the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival with the Saito Kinen Orchestra; his debut at the Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in Mahler's Fifth Symphony as well as a re-engagement with the Philharmonia Orchestra with Capriccio at the Edinburgh International Festival.
Soddy is a regular guest at the leading opera houses of the German-speaking world. At the Vienna State Opera, he has conducted, among other works, the Viennese premiere of Raskatov's Animal Farm, as well as Otello , Elektra , Der Rosenkavalier , Hänsel und Gretel , Carmen , The Magic Flute , Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk , Salome , The Barber of Seville , and Parsifal . At the Berlin State Opera, he has conducted Lohengrin , Der Rosenkavalier , Fidelio , Der Freischütz , La bohème , The Magic Flute, and Samson et Dalila .
Other significant opera engagements include Così fan tutte , Tannhäuser , Salome , and Samson et Dalila at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Aida , La bohème , and Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera; Elektra at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; The Magic Flute and La bohème at the Bavarian State Opera; La traviata at the Tokyo Nikikai Opera Theatre; Der Freischütz at the Semperoper Dresden ; Macbeth at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; productions of La bohème and Madama Butterfly at the Royal Swedish Opera; and a combination of works by Arnold Schoenberg and Frank Martin at the Oper Frankfurt .
Soddy is also in demand internationally as a concert conductor. His recent engagements include the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Bern Symphony Orchestra, the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Copenhagen Philharmonic, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Royal Swedish Orchestra, the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra, the Orquestra de València, the Oregon Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. A recent highlight was a tour of Austria with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
From 2016 to 2022, Soddy served as General Music Director of the Nationaltheater Mannheim, where he focused on the core German and Italian operatic repertoire. He was also Artistic Director of the house’s Akademiekonzerte series, where his programming centred on the symphonic works of Bruckner and other Romantic composers. Previous positions include Chief Conductor at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt (2013–2016) and Kapellmeister at the Hamburg State Opera (2010–2012).
Born in Oxford, Soddy studied at the Royal Academy of Music, the University of Cambridge, and the National Opera Studio in London.
