Philippe Jordan leads a new production of Richard Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” at the Vienna State Opera in May and June 2025. Directed by Lydia Steier, with set design and video by Momme Hinrichs and costumes by Alfred Mayerhofer, this major new staging brings together an exceptional creative team for one of Wagner’s most compelling operas.

'Following the new Wagner productions of "Parsifal", "Tristan und Isolde", "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" and "Lohengrin" in the last four seasons, "Tannhäuser" is on the Vienna State Opera's premiere schedule for May. The work will be staged by director Lydia Steier, who has enjoyed success between Paris, Salzburg, Dresden, Berlin and Vienna and whose debut at the Haus am Ring is eagerly awaited. The conductor is Philippe Jordan, the singers include house debutant Clay Hilley as Tannhäuser, Malin Byström as Elisabeth, Ekaterina Gubanova as Venus, Ludovic Tézier as Wolfram and Günther Groissböck as Landgrave Hermann.' Music Director of the Wiener Staatsoper since 2020, Philippe Jordan has shaped the house's artistic profile through acclaimed new productions including “Madama Butterfly”, “Parsifal”, “Macbeth”, “Le Nozze di Figaro”, “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”, “Tristan und Isolde” and “Salome”. His 2023/24 season features “Il Trittico” and the completion of the Da Ponte cycle with “Così fan tutte”.
Beyond Vienna, Jordan maintains an active international schedule, including a Ring Cycle at Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden and symphonic engagements with the world’s leading orchestras. From the 2027/28 season, he will serve as Music Director of the Orchestre National de France.
This new “Tannhäuser” marks a powerful continuation of his artistic vision at the Vienna State Opera.
