San Francisco Opera Announces Five-Year Contract Extension with Music Director Eun Sun Kim Through 2031

San Francisco, CA (October 17, 2024) — San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock today announced the five-year contract extension of Music Director Eun Sun Kim through the 2030-31 season. This includes her initiative to conduct major operas each year by two pivotal composers—Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner. Next fall, she will lead a brand-new production of Wagner's final work, Parsifal , leading ultimately to Wagner's monumental Ring Cycle in a future season.

This month, Kim conducts Wagner's Tristan und Isolde for the first time (October 19 to November 5) and a sold-out performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on October 26, marking the work's 200th anniversary.

Seoul-born Eun Sun Kim is the fourth Music Director in the San Francisco Opera's 102-year history, taking up her position in fall 2021 to oversee the opera's return to the operatic stage following the global pandemic and its historic 2022/23 anniversary season.
