Simone Young and Alexander Soddy conduct " Das Rheingold " at the Teatro alla Scala in the new production of The Ring of the Nibelung
After ten years, the Teatro alla Scala presents a new production of Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung .
The production is directed by David McVicar, who is internationally regarded as one of the most acclaimed opera directors of our time and has already staged a wide repertoire of works at La Scala – from Cavalli to Berlioz and Cilea to Verdi.
The ensemble of singers features important Wagner voices, including Michael Volle as Wotan throughout the cycle, Camilla Nylund as Brünnhilde, and Klaus Florian Vogt as Siegmund and Siegfried.
The performances of Das Rheingold in 2024 will be directed by Simone Young (October 28, 31, November 3) and Alexander Soddy (November 5, 7, 10). The conductors for the remaining works will be announced as soon as possible. The new production was originally scheduled to be conducted by Christian Thielemann, who had to withdraw due to health reasons.
The four new productions will initially be presented individually over the next three seasons: Das Rheingold in October/November 2024, Die Walküre in February 2025, Siegfried in June 2025, and Götterdämmerung in February 2026. Starting in early March 2026, to mark the 150th anniversary of the premiere in 1876, the entire tetralogy will be performed in two complete cycles—each within a week, as Richard Wagner intended.
