Biography
Kirill Serebrennikov is one of the most sought-after directors internationally for opera, drama, film and ballet.
Following the successful opening of the new Ring Cycle at the Salzburg Easter Festival with Das Rheingold Kirill Serebrennikov will continue it in the 2026/27 season with Wagner's Die Walküre . With the inaugural KIRILL & FRIENDS BERLIN FESTIVAL (September 4–13, 2026), he is also establishing a new international festival format in Berlin. The artist collective KIRILL & FRIENDS, which he founded in 2023, unites artists from diverse backgrounds and artistic disciplines. The festival will bring the collective's work together in Berlin for the first time and sees itself as a platform for international artistic exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration.
In addition to his work in theater and opera, Serebrennikov is also one of the most influential European filmmakers of our time. His films are regularly presented and awarded at major international festivals. Most recently , The Disappearance of Josef Mengele premiered in Cannes in 2025 and received seven nominations for the German Film Award in 2026.

Kirill Serebrennikov, born in Rostov-on-Don, initially studied physics and simultaneously began his work as a self-taught theater, opera, and film director as well as a costume designer. He gained international attention early on with productions such as Salome (Stuttgart Opera), Il barbiere di Siviglia ( Komische Oper Berlin ) and the Orff project Mysterion with Teodor Currentzis.
Highlights of past seasons include the opening of the new Ring Cycle at the Salzburg Easter Festival with Das Rheingold under the musical direction of Kirill Petrenko, and his acclaimed ballet production Nureyev at the Berlin State Ballet, for which he was responsible for direction, libretto, and set design. In the 2024/25 season, he directed Don Carlo at the Vienna State Opera, Schnittke 's Leben mit einem Idioten at the Zurich Opera, Don Giovanni at the Komische Oper Berlin, and Boris Godunov at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam. He concluded the season with the play The Blizzard by Vladimir Sorokin at the Salzburg Festival.
His highly acclaimed operatic works include Falstaff at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Le Coq d'or at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, American Lulu at the Vienna Festival, Così fan tutte (Zurich), Nabucco (Hamburg), Parsifal (Vienna State Opera), The Nose (Bavarian State Opera), Der Freischütz (Amsterdam) and the Mozart-Da Ponte cycle at the Komische Oper Berlin.
Serebrennikov's theatrical work encompasses both classics by Russian authors and works by Shakespeare, Brecht, and Martin McDonagh. His production of Vasily Sigarev's Plastilin was recorded by ARTE and broadcast internationally.
He was the founder of the platform "Studio Seven" and artistic director of the legendary Gogol Center in Moscow (2012–2021), a cross-genre theatre laboratory. Among other works, he created *Dead Souls* , the musical adaptation of *Spring Awakening * (after Duncan Sheik), and *Machine Müller* (with the Goethe-Institut). For his work on the ballet *Nureyev* at the Bolshoi Theatre and *Little Tragedies* after Pushkin, he received the Golden Mask, Russia's highest theatre award, in 2019.
