Philippe Jordan - Cancellation of concerts with the Staatskapelle Berlin in October 2023

Philippe Jordan deeply regrets having to cancel his conducting of the Staatskapelle Berlin's subscription concerts on October 30 and 31, 2023, due to health reasons. The former Kapellmeister of the Staatskapelle Berlin had been eagerly looking forward to returning to the orchestra's podium after 14 years. This makes the anticipation for Wagner's RING Cycle, which Philippe Jordan will conduct twice at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in March and April 2024, all the greater.

Markus Poschner will take over the musical direction of both concerts from Philippe Jordan, for which we thank him very much.

The concert program on October 30 and 31 remains unchanged:

Gidon Kremer, who has collaborated repeatedly with the Staatskapelle Berlin over the past decades, will be the soloist in Béla Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 1. Also on the concert program is Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D major.

Two first works will be performed in the Staatskapelle Berlin's Subscription Concert II: Béla Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 1, composed in 1907/08 as a musical declaration of love to the gifted young violinist Stefi Geyer, remained under wraps for five decades after the breakup of their relationship, and was only premiered after the composer's death. In it, Bartók reveals himself in a radical departure toward his very own, unmistakable style. In Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1, which surged forth from him powerfully "like a mountain torrent" in the spring of 1888, the characteristic "Mahler tone" is also present from the very beginning – rarely before has a composer emerged with such self-assurance in the unconditional nature of musical expression.
