Joana Mallwitz gives three debuts in one month: the Berlin Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera
JOANA MALLWITZ makes three debuts in one month: the Berlin Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera.
BERLIN PHILHARMONIC
Performances on 6/7/8 March 2025
Sergei Prokofiev, War and Peace op. 91: Overture
Sergei Rachmaninoff, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 , Anna Vinnitskaya, piano
Paul Hindemith, Symphony Mathis der Maler
Maurice Ravel, La Valse
"When she takes the podium, says Joana Mallwitz, she wants to "capture the audience from the very first note." This attitude has led her to a brilliant career: After serving as General Music Director in Erfurt and Nuremberg, she has been Chief Conductor of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin since 2023. In her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker, she will guide the audience through very different sound worlds with works by Prokofiev, Hindemith, and Ravel. Anna Vinnitskaya will also be the soloist in Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, a work full of dreamy melancholy and pianistic brilliance." (Source: Berliner Philharmoniker .)
LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC
Performances on March 14, 15, and 16, 2025
Marko NIKODIJEVIC, GHB/dance unit
TCHAIKOVSKY, Violin Concerto in D major , Op. 35
SCHUBERT, Symphony No. 9 , “The Great”
"Grammy-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich moves swiftly and thrillingly through the only violin concerto Tchaikovsky composed, a piece Hadelich calls the most exhilarating, fulfilling, and exhausting he has ever played. "Each of the expositions from which the theme is built feels both pleasurable and painful, more urgent than the last," Hadelich writes. Joana Mallwitz revels in the grandeur of Schubert's "Great" Symphony, from the opening solo French horn call through the stormy Scherzo to the glorious fanfare finale.
The program begins with Marko Nikodijevic's psychedelic orchestral piece, inspired by the techno music scene, sampling techniques, euphoria and the world of fractal beauties." (Source: Los Angeles Philharmonic .)
METROPOLITAN OPERA / THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO
Performances on March 31, April 5, 8, 11, 13, 18, 22, 26, and May 3, 7, 10, 14, and 17, 2025
"Conductor Joana Mallwitz makes her Met debut leading two exceptional casts in Mozart's comedic masterpiece. Bass-baritones Michael Sumuel and Luca Pisaroni play the wise servants Figaro, while sopranos Olga Kulchynska and Rosa Feola portray his fiancée, the wily maid Susanna. Baritone Joshua Hopkins and bass-baritone Adam Plachetka alternate as the skirt-swinging Count, while sopranos Federica Lombardi and Jacquelyn Stucker (in their Met debut) appear as his distraught wife. Mezzo-sopranos Sun-Ly Pierce and Emily D'Angelo share the role of the youthful pageboy Cherubino." (Source: The Met Opera .)
