Biography
Joana Mallwitz has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin since the 2023/24 season. In summer 2026, her contract was extended for a further five years, through the end of the 2032/33 season. Together with the orchestra, she has since made a distinctive contribution to Berlin’s musical life through widely acclaimed concert projects, international tours and innovative outreach formats.

Internationally, she is regarded as one of the leading conductors of her generation. Her acclaimed debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2020 with Mozart’s Così fan tutte marked an important milestone in her international operatic career. Since then, she has conducted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Bavarian State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Zurich Opera House, among others.
In 2026, Mallwitz opened the Baden-Baden Easter Festival with a new production of Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin, together with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, marking the beginning of a multi-year collaboration with the festival and the orchestra. In spring 2027, a new production of Fidelio will follow as part of the Beethoven anniversary year.
Mallwitz is a regular guest with the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Vienna Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra London, Munich Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony and Orchestre de Paris. The 2026/27 season will see her make her debuts with the New York Philharmonic and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.
A major focus of her work at the Konzerthaus Berlin in the coming season will be the launch of an extensive Beethoven cycle. In her “Expedition Concerts”, Joana Mallwitz and the Konzerthausorchester will explore all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies by the end of 2027. In addition, Mallwitz and the orchestra will embark on a European tour taking them to eleven major musical centres across Europe.
Mallwitz is an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon recording artist. Her debut album with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, The Kurt Weill Album, earned her the OPUS Klassik award as “Conductor of the Year” and also received the Gramophone Award for “Orchestral Recording of the Year”.
When she took up her position at Theater Erfurt in the 2014/15 season, she became the youngest General Music Director in Europe. After four successful years, she moved to the Staatstheater Nürnberg in 2018 in the same capacity. There, her numerous productions, concerts and innovative formats attracted widespread attention beyond the region, and in 2019, after her first season with the company, she was named “Conductor of the Year” in „Opernwelt“ magazine’s annual critics’ poll.
The “Expedition Concerts” she initiated, as well as the orchestra academy she founded in Erfurt and the Junge Staatsphilharmonie in Nuremberg, remain successful formats to this day. In April 2024, the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg appointed Joana Mallwitz its “Honorary Conductor” – the first time this title had been awarded in the orchestra’s more than 100-year history.
Born in Hildesheim, Germany, Joana Mallwitz studied at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. She is a recipient of the Bavarian Constitutional Order. In recognition of her longstanding commitment to classical music education and the promotion of young talent, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by the German Federal President at Bellevue Palace in 2023.
The documentary Joana Mallwitz – Momentum by Günter Atteln, released in spring 2024, attracted considerable interest from audiences and the media alike.
