Biography
The award-winning Austrian costume designer Alfred Mayerhofer has been working internationally in the fields of opera, theater, ballet, film and television since 1992.
In the 2026/27 season, Alfred Mayerhofer will design the costumes for Ronja the Robber's Daughter at the Volksoper Vienna (directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam) and for the semi-staged production of *Bretter, die die Welt bedeuten* at the Komische Oper Berlin (directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam). Further work takes him to the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich with *Romeo und Juliet* (directed by Herbert Föttinger), to the Staatstheater Darmstadt with *Peter Grimes* (directed by Karsten Wiegand), and to the... Bühne Baden (Director: Alexander Balga), Ariadne auf Naxos at the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich (Director: Josef E. Köpplinger) and with The Seven Deadly Sins / Abyss at the Bregenz Festival

Alfred Mayerhofer's work is characterized by stylistic diversity and narrative precision. He is known to a wide television audience through the television series Kafka , for which he was honored with the DAfNE Award for Best Costume Design in February 2025.
His most recent works include The Bartered Bride at the Vienna State Opera, Konrad and Mokka Hits and Milk Bar Dreams at the Komische Oper Berlin, Cinderella's Dream and Ronja the Robber's Daughter at the Volksoper Vienna, Snow White and the 77 Dwarfs at the Graz Opera, L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Darmstadt State Theatre, Regina at the Leipzig Opera, and La Traviata at the Gärtnerplatz Theatre in Munich. Successful productions of recent seasons included the world premiere of Alma at the Volksoper Vienna (directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam), Intermezzo at the Semperoper Dresden (directed by Axel Ranisch), Carmen and La Cage aux Folles (directed by Josef Köpplinger), A Midsummer Night's Dream, The White Horse Inn , and Tannhäuser (directed by Lydia Steier) at the Vienna State Opera. The Magic Flute (directed by Josef E. Köpplinger) and The Bird Seller (directed by Bernd Mottl) at the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich, Nils Holgersson (directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam) and the popular song Gisela (directed by Axel Ranisch) at the Komische Oper Berlin, as well as The Merry Widow (directed by Bernd Mottl) at the Oper Köln .
His artistic signature shaped numerous productions at renowned stages, including the Vienna State Opera with Danton's Death and Lohengrin (directed by Barrie Kosky), the Sydney Opera House with Poppea , the Opéra National de Lyon with Rigoletto , and the Komische Oper Berlin: Saul, Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver, Kiss Me, Kate and Iphigenia in Tauris ; at the Hamburg State Opera with Il Trittico ; at the Hanover State Opera presents The Young Lord, Werther , on Gran Teatre del Liceu with Il barbiere di Siviglia , at the Semperoper Dresden with The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein , at the Stuttgart State Opera: Hansel and Gretel , on Gärtnerplatztheater Munich with The Rake's Progress, Duchess of Gerolstein, Werther , Mata Hari, Candide, La Bohème, Victoria and Her Hussar and Dangerous Liaisons ; at the Nuremberg State Theatre with Wozzeck and The Ring of the Nibelung ; at Aalto Music Theatre Essen with Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Tristan and Isolde, The Flying Dutchman , as well as at the theatre in Vienna's Josefstadt district with The Parisian Woman, The Journey of the Lost and Jägerstätter.
He has enjoyed a close collaboration with Lydia Steier since 2013: The Emperor's New Clothes ( Komische Oper Berlin ), Iolanta – Oedipus Rex ( Oper Frankfurt ), La Juive, Le nozze di Figaro (Hannover State Opera).
