Biography

Sebastian Weigle is one of the most distinguished German conductors of his generation. Since the 2019 season, he has been Chief Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, where he has performed concert performances of Alban Berg's Wozzeck and an acclaimed European tour with works by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven He recently made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra.

  • In the 2025/26 season, further concert invitations will take him to the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Hungarian National Philharmonic, the Graz Philharmonic, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Frankfurter Museumskonzerte, as well as for the first time to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

    He returns to the Bavarian State Opera after the highly acclaimed new production of Strauss's Die Liebe der Danae and will take over the musical direction of Parsifal in spring 2026, as well as concert engagements with the Bavarian State Orchestra. Other important opera engagements take him to the Vienna State Opera with Salome and to the Oper Frankfurt , where he conducts the revival of Rudi Stephan's The first humans – the work that is considered to be his last new production during his time as General Music Director of this stage.

    Weigle's career has taken him to numerous renowned houses, including the state operas in Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Hamburg, and Vienna, as well as to Zurich, Tokyo, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. As a concert Conductor, he has worked with leading orchestras such as the radio orchestras in Berlin, Munich, Vienna, and Stuttgart, the Vienna and Bamberg Symphony Orchestras, the major Scandinavian orchestras, and internationally in Tokyo, Chicago, and Melbourne.

    From 2008 to 2023 Sebastian Weigle was General Music Director of the Oper Frankfurt Previously, he served as chief conductor of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona from 2004 to 2009. He made his Bayreuth Festival debut in 2007 with a highly acclaimed new production of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg .

    His extensive work is documented on numerous CD and DVD productions, including recordings of works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Rott, as well as the celebrated Frankfurt Ring des Nibelungen (directed by Vera Nemirova), released in 2012 on OehmsClassics.

    Born in Berlin, Sebastian Weigle studied horn, piano, and conducting at the “Hanns Eisler” Academy of Music. In 1982, he became Principal Solo Horn of the Staatskapelle Berlin, and in 1987 he founded the Kammerchor Berlin and the Neue Berliner Kammerorchester. As Principal Conductor of the Junge Philharmonie Brandenburg and later as Staatskapellmeister at the Berlin State Opera (1997–2002), he played a significant role in shaping the musical life of the capital.
