Weigle, YNSO Give Compelling Performance of 'Wozzeck' Opera in Tokyo Weigle, the principal conductor of the YNSO, integrated all the scenes with finesse. The waltzing part in Act II was refreshingly mellow, while the long B sustained by the full orchestra after Wozzeck's death was intense and eerily evocative. He created musical imagery with the depth and nuance of orchestral sound.

Biography
Sebastian Weigle is widely regarded as one of the leading German conductors of his generation. Since 2019, he has served as Chief Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, where he has enjoyed major successes, including concert performances of Alban Berg's Wozzeck and a critically acclaimed European tour featuring works by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven.

The 2026/27 season includes Le nozze di Figaro at the San Francisco Opera, Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust with the Nikikai Opera Foundation, and the Japanese concert premiere of Rudi Stephan's Die ersten Menschen with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. At the Vienna State Opera, he conducts Der Rosenkavalier, Die tote Stadt, and Die Zauberflöte. On the concert stage, he also appears with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, and reflecting his longstanding commitment to nurturing young musicians, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie.
His international career has taken him to many of the world's leading opera houses, including the State Operas of Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Dresden, and Vienna, the Zurich Opera House, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and major opera companies in Tokyo. As a concert conductor, he has collaborated with renowned orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony, the radio orchestras of Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Vienna, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as leading orchestras throughout Scandinavia and in Tokyo, Chicago, Dallas, Melbourne, and Singapore.
From 2008 to 2023, Sebastian Weigle served as General Music Director of Oper Frankfurt. Prior to that, he was Chief Conductor of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona from 2004 to 2009. He made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 2007 with a widely acclaimed new production of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
His extensive discography includes numerous CD and DVD recordings, among them works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Hans Rott, as well as the acclaimed Frankfurt Ring des Nibelungen (staged by Vera Nemirova), released by OehmsClassics in 2012.
Born in Berlin, Sebastian Weigle studied horn, piano, and conducting at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler". In 1982, he was appointed Principal Horn of the Staatskapelle Berlin. In 1987, he founded the Berlin Chamber Choir and the New Berlin Chamber Orchestra. As Chief Conductor of the Junge Philharmonie Brandenburg and later as Kapellmeister at the Berlin State Opera (1997–2002), he played a significant role in shaping Berlin's musical life early in his career.
