Biography
Canadian mezzosoprano Michèle Losier is celebrated by both audiences and press worldwide for her vocally and dramatically captivating role portrayals.
During the 2025/26 season, she made her highly acclaimed role debut as Kundry in Wagner’s Parsifal at the Semperoper Dresden in a new production conducted by Daniele Gatti. In the 2026/27 season, she will reprise the role of Kundry there and also make her debut at the Bayreuth Festival under the baton of Christian Thielemann in this role. She opens her season as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at Hamburg State Opera. She will also appear in Mendelssohn’s Elijah at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence, as well as in Victorin de Joncières’ opera Lancelot as Guinèvere with the Munich Radio Orchestra under the baton of Leo Hussain, before returning to the role of Donna Elvira in a concert performance with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal under the direction of Rafael Payare. In Reynaldo Hahn’s La Carmélite, she will take on the role of Athénaïs de Montespan at Müpa in Budapest.

Highlights from past seasons include Carmen at the Classic Busan Festival under the baton of Myung-Whun Chung and at the Vienna State Opera; Mère Marie in Robert Carsen’s new production of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites under Riccardo Minasi at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia; La voix humaine with the George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest as the second work by this composer in the same season, and Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier including performances at the Vienna State Opera, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and in Christoph Walz’s acclaimed new production at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. With the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal under Rafael Payere, she appeared as Dorabella in a semi-staged production of Così fan tutte by Thomas Hampson, and at the Hamburg State Opera under Ádám Fischer and at the Opéra national de Paris as Sesto in La clemenza di Tito.
Other engagements included the role of the Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Siébel (Faust) at the Vienna State Opera, and Nicklausse in Les contes d’Hoffmann at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and at La Monnaie in Brussels. She sang Ascagne in Dmitri Tcherniakov’s production of Les Troyens under Philippe Jordan at the Opéra Bastille, Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle with Yannick Nézet-Séguin in Montreal, Charlotte (Werther) and Jane Seymour in Anna Bolena at the Opéra national de Bordeaux, and Idamante in Mozart’s Idomeneo at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. At the Opéra national de Paris, she was acclaimed in Terry Gilliam’s production of Benvenuto Cellini under the baton of Philippe Jordan and as Dorabella in Così fan tutte in a production by choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker at the Palais Garnier.
The artist’s achievement at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 2005 led to her house debut as Diane (Iphigénie en Tauride), under the baton of Louis Langrée, alongside Susan Graham and Placido Domingo. This was followed by engagements at some of the world's leading opera houses, e.g. as Siébel at the Royal Opera House in London and at the Metropolitan Opera, Ascanio (Benvenuto Cellini) at De Nationale Opera Amsterdam, Sesto at the Vienna State Opera and at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Prince Charmant (Cendrillon) at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Charlotte at Opera Australia, Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Opéra national de Paris, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Salzburg Festival and as Carmen at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen. Furthermore she sang at opera houses and festivals like Opéra-Comique, Edinburgh International Festival, Opéra de Lyon, Opéra de Montréal, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Opéra d'Avignon, Opéra Lille and Festival International de Lanaudière, and has worked with Orchestras such as Les Musiciens du Louvre, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Montreal Metropolitan Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Colombus Symphony Orchestra and Pygmalion Ensemble.
A focus of her concert schedule is the works of Gustav Mahler; in recent years, for example, she has performed the Kindertotenlieder (Staatskapelle Dresden under Daniele Gatti), the Rückert Lieder (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under Ingo Metzmacher), the Second Symphony (Maggio Musicale and George Enescu Festival in Bucharest, both under Zubin Mehta, Würth Philharmonic under Claudio Vendelli, and Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est under David Reiland), the Third Symphony (Brussels Philharmonic under Kazushi Ono, Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, both under Daniele Gatti, and Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est under David Reiland), and Das Lied von der Erde (Musici de Montréal under Jea-Marie Zeitouni). Other concert engagements in recent years have included Elijah (Staatskapelle Dresden and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome under Daniele Gatti), Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang (RAI National Symphony Orchestra in Turin under Daniele Gatti), and Brahms’s Alt-Rhapsody in her home province of Québec, as well as works such as Berlioz’s L’enfance du Christ and Les nuits d’été, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Missa solemnis, Ravel’s Shéhérazade, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle, Mozart’s Requiem, and others.
Michèle Losier has worked with conductors such as Louis Langrée, Patrick Fourmilier, Emmanuel Plasson, Marc Minkowski, Jérémie Rhorer, Stephane Denève, Kent Nagano, Emmanuelle Haïm, Sir Andrew Davis, François-Xavier Bilger, Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Nicola Luisetti, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Colin Davis, Evelino Pido, Placido Domingo, James Conlon and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, just to name a few.
The Montréal-native is alumna of McGill University and was also a member of Merola Opera Program in San Francisco, Opéra de Montréal's Atelier Lyrique and the Juilliard Opera Center in New York. She has been the recipient of a number of grants and scholarships, including those from the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Sylva-Gelber Foundation. She is a First Prize winner at the Journées de la Musique Française, the Vocal Division of the Canadian Music Competition, and of the Mélodie Française category of the Chant de Marmande International Competition in France. Her success at the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Competition in 2008 won her a recital tour of Europe and a recording of the Chansons of Henri Duparc with pianist Daniel Blumenthal, released in April 2009 on the Fuga Libera label. Since then she can be heard on numerous other CD and DVD productions.
