It is admirable that Bengtsson sustains this demanding role without tiring and brings it across the stage in a sophisticated manner in every detail. In addition to her acting, her strengths lie in the elastically placed, silky shimmering high notes. In the endless cantilenas, some of which are written in a stratospheric range, Bengtsson offers pure vocal luxury. The tones flow sul fiato with an almost brazen lightness.

Biography
Maria Bengtsson begins the 2026/27 season with a tour of Mahler's Second Symphony under Sir Antonio Pappano, taking her to Ljubljana, Tokyo, and London. She will sing the role of Ellen Orford in Britten's Peter Grimes in a production by David Radok in Helsinki. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, she will sing the Countess in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro , and at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, she will make her role debut as Grete in Schreker's Der ferne Klang in a production by Christof Loy.
On the concert stage, she can be heard at the New Year's Concert in Malmö and sings Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony under the direction of Simone Young in Oslo. She will also tour with the Budapest Festival Orchestra performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and will appear as a soloist in Mahler's Second Symphony under Philippe Jordan at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia.

Highlights of past seasons include the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and at the Munich Opera Festival, Christine in Intermezzo at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Semperoper Dresden, Daphne at Oper Frankfurt, the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, as well as at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and Oper Frankfurt, the Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), the Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier) and the Countess (Capriccio) at the Vienna State Opera, the Contessa at the Opéra national de Paris and the Berlin State Opera, Donna Anna at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Blanche in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites at Oper Frankfurt, Ellen Orford in Britten's Peter Grimes at the Opéra national de Paris, at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and at Teatro Real Madrid, Rusalka as well as Clara in the world premiere of Christian Jost's Egmont at the Theater an der Wien, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte at the Hamburg State Opera and at the Teatro di San Carlo Naples under the direction of Riccardo Muti, Pamina in The Magic Flute at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the soprano part in Calixto Bieito's staged version of Verdi's Messa da Requiem at the Hamburg State Opera as well as in his scenic interpretation of Mendelssohn's Elijah at the Theater an der Wien and finally the title role in the world premiere of Detlev Glanert's opera Oceane at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
As a concert singer and Lieder interpreter, the Swedish singer performed at, among other venues, the Carinthian Summer Festival, the Berlin Festival, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Musikverein Wien, with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, at the Brucknerhaus Linz, at the Klangbogen Festival Vienna, at the Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon, at the Teatro Nacional Sao Carlos Lisbon and at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, as well as the Oper Frankfurt. Recent concerts have taken her to the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra with Barber's Knoxville, to Malmö and Hamburg with Strauss's Four Last Songs, to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Simone Young with Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony, to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra with Mahler's Symphony No. 2, to Gothenburg with Berg's Seven Early Songs under Simone Young, to Potsdam with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony under Antonello Manacorda, and to Antwerp for a New Year's concert. In addition, Maria Bengtsson performed with the BR Symphony Orchestra under Kirill Petrenko in Mendelssohn's Elijah, with the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo under the direction of Simone Young in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, in Antwerp with the Four Last Songs under Bertrand de Billy, at the Konzerthaus Berlin, with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Kirill Petrenko in Tel Aviv, as well as with the Hamburg Philharmonic under Bertrand de Billy and on the occasion of the opening of the Elbphilharmonie under Thomas Hengelbrock with Mendelssohn's Lobgesang.
Maria Bengtsson studied at the University of Music in Freiburg. From 2000 to 2002, she was a member of the ensemble at the Volksoper Vienna, and from 2002 to 2007 at the Komische Oper Berlin, where she appeared in numerous leading roles in Kirill Petrenko’s landmark productions. Since 2007, she has worked as a freelance artist.
