Biography

The British bass-baritone Iain Paterson is one of the most distinguished Wagner interpreters of his generation.

In the 2025/26 season he returns as Wotan to the Opéra National de Paris where he completes the Ring Cycle with Die Walküre and Siegfried . He can also be seen as Orestes in Elektra at the Bavarian State Opera and again as Wotan in Rheingold and Siegfried at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Further concert appearances take him to Radio France, among others.

  • His repertoire includes central roles such as Wotan/Wanderer, The Flying Dutchman, Kurwenal, Amfortas (Parsifal), Jochanaan, Orest, Balstrode and the Forester in Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen.

    He regularly performs at major venues such as the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Royal Opera House London, the Berlin State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Opéra National de Paris , Lyric Opera Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and English National Opera, where he developed numerous roles in his core field. He also demonstrated his artistic versatility with his interpretation of Leontes in the world premiere of Ryan Wigglesworth's The Winter's Tale .

    Paterson has appeared several times at the Bayreuth Festival, most recently in the role of Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde) under Christian Thielemann and as Wotan in Rheingold under Marek Janowski. In the concert field, he has sung Beethoven's 9th Symphony with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the BBC Philharmonic, as well as Elgar's Dream of Gerontius at the Edinburgh Festival.

    He regularly works with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Sir Antonio Pappano, Sir Simon Rattle, Andris Nelsons, Edward Gardner and Vasily Petrenko. He studied singing at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Neilson Taylor.
