ELZA VAN DEN HEEVER stars in two major new productions at the MET and San Francisco Opera
Renowned soprano Elza van den Heever will headline two exciting new productions during the 2024/25 season at two of America’s most prestigious opera houses:
“SALOME” AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA, NEW YORK
Elza van den Heever returns to the Metropolitan Opera to take on the title role in Richard Strauss’s “Salome”, in a highly anticipated new production conducted for the first time at the Met by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Visionary director Claus Guth reimagines the biblical tale through the lens of Oscar Wilde’s play, staging it in a richly symbolic Victorian setting that delves deep into the psychological undercurrents of the story.
Van den Heever portrays the tormented and obsessive Salome, alongside Peter Mattei as Jochanaan, Gerhard Siegel as Herod, Michelle DeYoung as Herodias, and Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. Two performances will be conducted by Derrick Inouye.
PREMIERE: April 29, 2025
Further performances: May 2, 6, 10, 13, 17, 21, 24, 2025
IDOMENEO AT THE SAN FRANCISCO OPERA
Following her Met performances, Elza van den Heever will appear as Elettra in a new staging of Mozart’s Idomeneo at the San Francisco Opera, conducted by Music Director Eun Sun Kim. Director Lindy Hume explores the opera’s themes of environmental tension and human responsibility, with striking projections of rugged seascapes that echo the power of Mozart’s music.
Van den Heever joins a stellar cast that includes Matthew Polenzani as Idomeneo, Daniela Mack as Idamante, Ying Fang as Ilia, and Alek Shrader as Arbace.
PREMIERE: June 14, 2025
Further performances: June 17, 20, 22, 25, 2025
