BERG: WOZZECK (NEW PRODUCTION)
MARIE (ROLE DEBUT)
Jennifer Holloway makes her role debut as Marie in Alban Berg's Wozzeck at La Monnaie in Brussels, in a new production by Christophe Coppens (director and set designer) conducted by the house's music director, Alain Altinoglu. Alongside Scott Hendricks in the title role, Holloway takes on one of the defining soprano parts of the 20th century.
The debut follows a triumphant summer at the Bayreuth Festival, where Holloway sang Adriano in the festival's first-ever production of Rienzi, conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann and directed by Alexandra Szemerédy and Magdolna Parditka. Peter Krause wrote in concerti: "As Adriano in the trouser role, Jennifer Holloway is a dramatically erupting soprano volcano and a real crowd-pleaser. Her brilliant vocal development points to highly dramatic territory." Seen and Heard International called her "possibly the best singer" of the evening, imbuing the demanding role with "passion and a beautiful legato."
