Biography
Louisa Proske has established herself as a versatile, visionary opera director and artistic director on two continents. After studying English Literature at the University of Cambridge and directing at the Yale School of Drama, she developed a distinctive style that combines musical precision, narrative clarity, and poetic imagery.
The 2026/27 season marks two significant house debuts: Proske opens the Metropolitan Opera’s season with Verdi’s Macbeth before making her debut at the Opéra national de Paris with Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Detroit Opera will also present her acclaimed production of Tosca from the Glimmerglass Festival.

As co-founder and former co-artistic director of Heartbeat Opera, she shaped a company described by The New York Times as “small and young, but crucial to the future of the genre” and hailed by The Wall Street Journal as “pioneers.” Her acclaimed productions for the company include Der Freischütz, Don Giovanni, Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoor, Daphnis & Chloé, and Miss Handel.
Her recent productions include Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl, Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the world premiere of Die verzauberte Stadt at the Aalto-Theater Essen, and the first staged performance of Primero Sueño in Mexico City. She previously directed Tosca to open the Glimmerglass Festival’s 50th-anniversary season, as well as new productions of Handel’s Serse and Amadigi di Gaula, which opened their respective editions of the International Handel Festival in Halle. Other credits include Rusalka at Regensburg Opera, Rinaldo at Detroit Opera and the Glimmerglass Festival, Chausson’s Le Roi Arthus at Bard SummerScape, and the world premiere of Primero Sueño at MetLiveArts in New York. She also directed The Mother of Us All, a historic collaboration between the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Philharmonic, and Juilliard Vocal Arts. The New York Times named the production its No. 1 classical music highlight of 2020.
From 2021 to 2024, Proske served as deputy artistic director and resident director at Oper Halle, where her productions included Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Gypsy, Into the Woods and Rigoletto.
She received a Princess Grace Award in 2018 and was nominated for Director of the Year in Opernwelt’s 2024 critics’ poll.
Her theatre directing credits include Webster’s The White Devil at Red Bull Theatre in New York; Engagements, Gaslight, and This at Barrington Stage Company; productions at the Assembly Theatre in Edinburgh; and a European tour of Macbeth. Her production of Jiehae Park’s peerless earned her a Berkshire Theatre Award nomination.
